Discovering the Jesus of Christmas

The usual Christmas media pitch for charitable works (this one from The New Republic by E.J. Dionne) contains the following nugget of information:
The Jesus of Christmas, Pelikan tells us in “Jesus Through the Centuries,” owes a particular debt to St. Francis of Assisi, who preached “a new and deeper awareness of the humanity […]

O’Reilly, Rove, Limbaugh: Loonies All

Posted by Harry Haller | Leave a Comment

Get out the straitjackets. Bill O’Reilly, Karl Rove, and Rush Limbaugh have gone completely mad. Think Progress has the harebrained evidence. Paul Krugman wonders why these loonies are still still walking the streets:
Why does such stuff flourish? Probably because there is no punishment for it — as long as you’re on the right, and I […]

Ex-Candidates Emerge as Radio Hosts

Posted by Harry Haller | Leave a Comment

What becomes of failed conservative presidential candidates after their campaigns crash and burn? If they’re Fred Thompson, they arise from the ashes as news-talk radio personalities. God help us all:
Several of the supporting actors in this year’s Republican primary are showing interest in the medium, too. Fred Thompson, the “Law & Order” star turned presidential […]

Lessig’s Views Haven’t “Shifted”

Posted by Harry Haller | Leave a Comment

Lawrence Lessig insists he hasn’t given up the fight for net neutrality, and his views haven’t “shifted”:
That’s the same thing I said to the FCC in its hearing at Stanford…. There I distinguish between “zero price regulations” (such as Markey’s bill (which I say I am against)) and what I called “zero discriminatory surcharge rules” […]

Network Neutrality May Be Off the Table

Posted by Harry Haller | Leave a Comment

When even Lawrence Lessig (who has the ear of Barack Obama) backs away from a hardline stance on network neutrality, you can be fairly certain the issue is dead:
But some of those who advise the new president on technology have changed their view on network neutrality. Stanford’s Mr. Lessig, for one, has softened his opposition […]

Fa-la-la-la-la, Part 5 (Shut Up!)

Posted by Harry Haller | Leave a Comment

When I was a kid, Christmas was a season of good will toward men. People were a little more tolerant of one another. They smiled a little easier. It was about making nice for the sake of children, being good for Santa, and remembering the baby Jesus. For believers and for non-believers, the season honored […]

Krugman Distorted

Posted by Harry Haller | Leave a Comment

Last night I quoted a Reuters story that said Paul Krugman believed the American auto industry would “disappear.” It turns out he was misquoted. In a blog post from Sweden today, he clarifies:
Urk. I gather that there’s a report on the wires quoting me as saying that the US auto industry would disappear. What I […]

Newspapers on the Chopping Block

Posted by Harry Haller | Leave a Comment

The Chicago Tribune is facing bankruptcy, according to The New York Times’ DealBook. Reading it, I can’t help but wonder how long it will be before the Times follows suit, or before Rupert Murdoch makes them an offer they can’t refuse. If either of those things occur, I’ll be saddened beyond simple grief.
All the more […]

Now It’s “Singlism”

Posted by Harry Haller | Leave a Comment

Gail Collins doesn’t go for the “sexism” jugular. With her, it’s “singlism.” Two wars, torture, financial crisis, hemorrhaging jobs by the hundred thousands, terrorism in Mumbai, and Collins wants to flay Ed Rendell for “singlism”. Forgive my apparent apathy.
No wonder newspapers are struggling to keep their heads above water.

CNN’s Naked Lunch

Posted by Harry Haller | Leave a Comment

John Cole weighs in on Campbell Brown’s response to the open microphone comment made by Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell about Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano’s appointment to Homeland Security, calling it “another trumped up bit of nonsense.” He dismisses Brown’s charge of sexism, saying, “…it seems pretty silly to accuse the guy who spent the better […]
